Part philosophy. Part science. Entirely human.

The story behind Reflecting Room, what shapes our approach, and the people bringing it to life.

We can study human existence endlessly and still never fully capture what it means to live it.

Science can explain mechanisms. It can identify patterns, measure responses, and offer theories about why we do what we do.

But it can't fully account for the subjective experience of being a person. The meaning we give to our experiences. The contradictions we carry. The strange ability to know something intellectually and feel something entirely different.

Because understanding how the human mind works isn't quite the same as understanding what it feels like to have one.

Reflecting Room was founded on the belief that meaningful therapy needs both. The knowledge that science gives us, and the curiosity, compassion, and humility to recognize what it cannot.

Somewhere between the science and the experience.

02 / THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGIES FRAMEWORK

What if the challenges we face aren't always separate problems to solve, but different expressions of the same underlying pattern?

Consider someone who:

On the surface, these might look like different problems.

But underneath, all three may reflect different expressions

of the same underlying adaptive strategy.

pulls away emotionally when a relationship starts getting serious

constantly looks for signs that their partner might betray them

or struggles to tell even their closest friends when something is wrong.

guarding

noun · psychology · adaptive strategy

1. A protective strategy developed when emotional closeness, vulnerability, or trust have repeatedly felt unsafe, characterized by caution, limited vulnerability, and selective trust.

“Guarding may offer protection from emotional pain, but can also limit the closeness and connection we crave.”

Guarding represents only one out of five adaptive strategies that we've identified.

Curious how your adaptive strategies may be shaping your life?

Humanity over performance

You don't need to become a more optimized, productive, endlessly improving version of yourself to deserve a life that feels like yours.

Science made accessible
Flexibility over perfection
Curiosity before judgement

The goal isn't to eliminate every uncomfortable thought, feeling, or response. It's having more freedom in how you respond to them.

We care about rigorous psychology and research, but we translate it into language people can actually understand and apply to their lives.

Before asking “How do I stop doing this?” we're interested in “Why might I have learned to do this in the first place?”

Some principles we keep coming back to.
